Reality Bites

This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time.

In talking to some people over the past few days I’ve pinned down what it is that bothers me about college. Everyone has the outlook that they’re getting jobs to finance whatever it is they actually want to do with their lives. No one has any hope that they might get paid for what they want to do. Likewise, no one has any expectation that they will actually get anything out of school; it’s just something you have to do if you want to have a chance in the “real world”.

Fuck that. The world is what you make of it. Maybe that’s the answer to relativism. If everyone chooses what matters to them then there is no reason for anyone to be unhappy with life. If you are, you have two choices: change your expectations or change your life. So if people want to believe in a hyper-charged, consumption-driven, petroleum-fueled society, that’s their prerogative. What pisses me off is people who are in denial about it, the posers who walk around in trench coats or smoke themselves retarded or post diatribes online using their $2000 computers. Obviously I’m talking about myself here, but at least I’m aware of my own hypocrisy. Everyone else, take note: if you bought it in a store, you aren’t rebelling against anything. Don’t be surprised if you wake up one morning and you’re 40 years old and you just spent $100 on a corkscrew.
