Budweiser is Delicious

The King of... well, cheap beers, anyway

The King of... well, cheap beers, anyway

The only upside of my shockingly delayed flight to New York (I could have driven there faster) was that the nice man flying the plane bought us all drinks. The beer options were Budweiser, and Miller Lite. As far as I can tell, Miller Lite tastes better going out than coming in, and I’m from St. Louis anyway, so Budweiser it was. Let me preface everything that follows by saying that I don’t think I’ve had a Bud in 3-4 years.

That beer was really, really good. In fact, I’ve had several since then, including one on a bench on the Brooklyn Bridge (most memorable drinking spot yet), and they’ve all been really good. So I bought one at the liquor store today and surfed over to BeerAdvocate to share my findings.

It’s rated a fucking 2.45. What’s more, the deviation is about 27%, so the reviews don’t agree with each other very well. This is a C+ beer at worst, and the people who are rating it lower either have an axe to grind or were rating it in the wrong category. As an IPA it would get terrible marks, but it isn’t an IPA, it’s a Standard American Lager, and a world-class example of the style. I mean, have you ever tried to brew one? It’s unbelievably hard. So, to everyone who bad-mouths Budweiser, look, it isn’t a great “craft” beer, and it doesn’t exactly set my toes a-tappin’ either, but it is what it is, and what it is is pretty damn good. Grow up.
