Obviously I haven’t been updating the blog lately (though there have been some behind-the-scenes upgrades, and hopefully you’ll notice decreased page load times). In lieu of actual content, I thought I’d share some of the reasons why, in order of ascending time-suck.

I fried my video card.
A new cooling fan seems to be doing its thing so far. Fingers crossed.

It has been absolutely dumping lately.
If you don’t follow the weather in the southern San Juans, you may not know that we’ve made up for a lack of early-season snowfall, and then some. Powder days take a lot out of a guy. (As my dad, pictured, will attest.)

I’m doing my damnedest to open a brewpub.
Hopefully much more on this in the weeks and months to come, but there’s a distinct possibility that I’ll be moving to Leadville in the near future.

Pass Creek Trail

Thursday, I was able to get away from the brewery a little early, so I finally managed to get in a hike I’ve been trying to do all summer. Pass Creek Trail runs from Coal Bank Pass up to join the Colorado Trail. From the junction, there’s a quick but treacherous spur that runs most of the way up Engineer Mountain. A trail guide will probably rate the trail “Moderate-Difficult” or somesuch, but don’t be fooled – excepting the last quarter-mile, the trail is wide, well-maintained, and only a gradual (albeit continuous) climb. And compared to Rysy, which will probably forever be my benchmark for difficult hikes, even the summit is a walk in the park.

The peak itself was probably blocking a few satellites once I got near the top. While the trailhead elevation is two feet off of the published value, a look at the topo map confirms that I ran out of handholds at roughly 12,500 ft, about 500 ft below the summit. Getting accurate and timely elevation fixes continues to be a problem. I don’t know if that’s a function of the iPhone GPS chipset, the software, or both.

The altitude numbers are conspicuously accurate. Either I got lucky, or there’s been a MotionX update that allows for better altitude fixes when only about half the sky is visible.

WTF Is Going On?

So, yeah, it’s been a while. Long story short, I am now the Head Brewer at Silverton Brewing Co. Long story slightly less short, I’m also the only brewhouse employee for the time being. A 70-hour week means I managed a day off. I’m planning a minor shift in focus in that direction, blog-wise. There are a lot of tips and tricks that professional brewers will find helpful, and home brewers may not.

I know that most of you come here to drink from the cup of home brewing glory, and rest assured I have been able to sneak the occasional batch in this spring/summer. I’m going to get all those recipes and tasting notes up in the next few days. There’s also some really fun stuff in the pipeline for the fall as well, including my first recipes using Brettanomyces. Stay tuned.
