One year ago today, I decided I didn’t really want to be fat anymore, and was going to lose 35 pounds in the next year. I didn’t quite make it, but I can say that I’m probably in better shape now than at any time since that last high school water polo game. I seriously recommend that anyone with similar goals move within walking distance of a gym.

So, I ran a half marathon. On a 10′28″ pace, which is… mediocre, considering what I’d been doing in training. Actually I don’t think it’s a good representation of my overall fitness. My 10K split was almost exactly an hour, meaning that I was well on my way to finishing under my 2:11:00 goal – and that for the first time in my life, I ran for an hour without stopping.

Then right around the halfway point, my left knee started to hurt. That’s pretty normal and a level of pain I could definitely (and, I’m pretty sure, safely) ignore. But somewhere between miles 8 and 9 my left ankle started absolutely throbbing. At the time I thought it was my Achilles’ tendon, but after resting and stretching it a (very) little, I’m pretty sure it’s actually the bottommost part of my calf muscle. At any rate, I pulled something. I wound up walking 18 minutes of those last five miles, and the times I was running, it was at about an 11′00″ pace. Oh well. I’ll be in better shape, and hopefully luckier, in May.

I bonked today. Almost an hour and a half into my last distance run before the mini, I started salivating, which I thought was weird; if anything I was getting pretty dehydrated by that point. A few minutes later I started to feel nauseated, and a few minutes after that my face and hands went numb. By the end of the run I was having trouble doing simple math problems, by which I mean counting to 60, in my head. I walked for just a minute, then realized that if I didn’t keep running I was just going to slow down continually. In short, it felt terrible.

It didn’t start out too well, either. 59th Street, which is near the beginning of all my runs, is completely closed for construction, both lanes and both sidewalks. Incidentally, this is part of the course for both the marathon and the half next weekend. I’m calling tomorrow to make sure they, you know, know. So I had to backtrack about three-quarters of a mile to get around it. If you don’t look at the route maps normally (and honestly, I’m not sure why you would) you may want to check this one out. It’s pretty funny.

I went out this morning intending to do 7 miles, but right around the one mile mark something happened that has literally never happened to me before: my legs cramped up. I made it about a mile and a half before I had to stop and walk home. I’m pretty sure I can chalk this one up to a weekend of hedonism (I don’t even want to think about what my blood chemistry looks like) but it couldn’t have come at a worse time. At this point I can probably only get in one more long run and still take 3-4 days off before the race, and I really needed to up the distance by a few miles.

Beyond the immediate implications, though, this has been a sobering experience overall. As bad as I am at running (and I’m very, very bad) it doesn’t really bother me. I don’t get cramps or shin splints or muscle pulls or joint pain. In fact, I hardly ever have any health problems at all. I don’t take any maintenance medications, don’t have any chronic diseases (that I know of), don’t even get a cold every year. Apparently the tradeoff for losing the genetic fitness lottery is freakish durability. Now that I’m closer to 30 than 20, my body may be dropping hints that it won’t always be that way.

Or maybe I just need to eat more bananas.
