And he was especially tired of the comments about his weight.“You think you can sit on that chair?. € his classmates would ask.Other times they were where can you buy viagra over the counter more direct, saying simply. €œYou’re fat.”“Sometimes I’d be so depressed I wouldn’t eat for three days,” said Joe, now 25, who was a lineman on his high school’s football team.(Joe’s surname and that of another young person interviewed for this article are being withheld to protect their privacy. Joe is being identified by his middle name.)He thought about ending his life if the where can you buy viagra over the counter bullying didn’t stop.

Those thoughts eventually became so pervasive that one day he came home where can you buy viagra over the counter from school and took a small handful of pills. But it was enough only to produce a bad stomachache.Months later, he was still feeling depressed. €œLet me go see a therapist where can you buy viagra over the counter. My head’s not right,” he told his father.

€œI’m having these thoughts of where can you buy viagra over the counter killing myself — that you’d all be better without me here.”Joe still remembers his father’s response. €œThat’s not true. We love where can you buy viagra over the counter you. But you want to talk to somebody where can you buy viagra over the counter and tell someone that?.

They’re going to think you’re crazy.”Over the past generation, a mental health crisis has been brewing among Black youths like Joe, one that very few people — including Black families — have spoken about publicly. Self-reported suicide attempts rose nearly 80 percent among Black adolescents from 1991 to 2019, while the prevalence of attempts did not change where can you buy viagra over the counter significantly among those of other races and ethnicities. Legislators and academics are now pushing for better research to understand why, especially in light of new evidence that suggests Black children may have unique risk factors for self-harm.‘I Didn’t Necessarily Want to Die’One study of high school students, published in September, found that the Black teenagers surveyed were more likely than the white teenagers to have attempted suicide without first having suicidal thoughts or plans. Because suicide screening questionnaires typically ask whether people are having suicidal thoughts or have made plans to hurt themselves, the authors speculated that the questionnaires might fail to identify some Black youths who are at risk of suicide, or that there could be additional factors that might indicate a need for intervention.More research is needed, but a government study conducted last year suggested that Black children and adolescents who died by suicide were more likely than white youths to have experienced where can you buy viagra over the counter a crisis in the two weeks before they died.

They were also more likely to have had a family relationship problem, argument or conflict, or a history of suicide attempts.Jordan Burnham, who survived a jump from a ninth-story window when he was 18, said that if he had been asked whether he was planning to kill himself that day, the answer would have been no.“I couldn’t even think that far ahead,” he said. The fall broke his pelvis, shattered his left leg and fractured his wrist, skull and jaw. It would be four where can you buy viagra over the counter years before he could walk again.“I didn’t necessarily want to die,” added Mr. Burnham, who is now 32 and visits as many as 60 schools a year to speak about suicide prevention and where can you buy viagra over the counter mental illness. €œBut the part of me that had depression and shame and sadness everyday — I wanted that pain to die.

I wanted that part to go away.”On the day of his suicide attempt, he was confronted by his parents about a stash of alcohol that where can you buy viagra over the counter they had found in his car. Although Mr. Burnham was diagnosed with depression as a teenager, he became so good at hiding it that even his own family members, who were loving and supportive, did not fully understand how much pain he held inside — or the extent to which he felt like an outsider as one of the few where can you buy viagra over the counter Black students at a mostly white school in suburban Philadelphia.Suicide and mental illness are often thought of as a “white phenomenon,” said Michael A. Lindsey, the executive director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University, who studies the mental health of Black adolescents.Looking at the raw numbers, it’s easy to understand why.

White deaths by where can you buy viagra over the counter suicide far outnumber those of Black people. But when taking into where can you buy viagra over the counter account youth suicide rates — the number of suicides per 100,000 individuals under age 25 — a different picture emerges.“I think the statistics are shocking,” said Dr. Lindsey, who was the first to document trends in rising suicide attempts among Black adolescents.A 2018 study found that while the suicide rate of Black children 5 to 12 was low, it was nearly twice that of white children in the same age group. In one of the most recent examples, a 10-year-old Black girl with where can you buy viagra over the counter autism died by suicide in Utah in early November.

Her parents said she had been subjected to racist bullying by her classmates.Among teenagers and young adults, suicide rates remain highest among whites, Native Americans and Alaska Natives. But while the suicide rate has recently declined among where can you buy viagra over the counter those groups, it has continued to rise among Black youths. From 2013 to 2019 the suicide rate of Black boys and men 15 to 24 years old rose by 47 percent, and by 59 percent for Black girls and women of the same age.Adolescents of color who identify as L.G.B.T.Q. May be especially at risk of a suicide attempt, according to a national survey conducted by the Trevor Project, a where can you buy viagra over the counter suicide prevention group for L.G.B.T.Q.

Youth.Despite the racial disparities — and the fact that suicide is the second leading cause of death among all adolescents — there has been a dearth of research examining the racial and ethnic differences in youth suicidal ideation, plans or suicide attempts. This is partly because Black researchers who examine health disparities have where can you buy viagra over the counter been underfunded — in March the director of the National Institutes of Health issued a public apology for “structural racism in biomedical research” — but also because there are only a handful of academics who study these topics.“You have to bring culture into this, you have to talk about racism, you have to talk about discrimination,” said Arielle Sheftall, a principal investigator at the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. €œIt is something that Black youth experience every single day.”A report presented to Congress in 2019 identified gaps in research and policy and has resulted in more research dollars flowing to studies related to Black youth suicide, including a program to teach middle schoolers about mental health and a suicide prevention intervention called Success Over Stress, which touches on themes like systemic racism and police brutality to help ninth-grade students at predominantly Black schools develop coping skills.“These kids have stressors that are uniquely different than other kids,” said LaVome Robinson, the lead investigator of the Success Over Stress study and a professor of psychology at DePaul University in Chicago.‘Nothing to Stress About’Deaths by suicide are more common among boys than girls overall, but a study published in September found that suicide rates among Black girls increased by an average of 6.6 percent each year from 2003 to 2017 — more than twice the increase for Black boys. A diagnosis of where can you buy viagra over the counter depression or anxiety was more common among the girls. Additionally, nearly 20 percent of the girls had engaged in an argument within 24 hours of their deaths.Denise (her middle name), 19, a high school senior in Cleveland, lives with her mother and six siblings.

She struggles with depression and anxiety, largely driven by conflict at home and the lingering trauma where can you buy viagra over the counter of a sexual assault.“When I told Mom how I was feeling, she didn’t seem to care,” Denise said, adding. €œShe said I had nothing to stress about because I’m a kid.”“I just felt like there was nothing nobody could do to change the situation.”One evening in September, after a disagreement with her mother, she texted one of her school counselors and told her. €œI don’t want to where can you buy viagra over the counter be here no more.”Her counselor insisted that she go to the hospital to get a psychiatric evaluation.“The first three nights I spent in the hospital, all I could do is cry,” said Denise, who received her first prescription for psychiatric medication while she was there. €œI just felt relieved that somebody could actually understand what I’m going where can you buy viagra over the counter through.

It felt good to let it all out after holding it in for so long.”Suicidal behavior is already a well-known problem in Denise’s school district, which is about two-thirds Black. In 2019, where can you buy viagra over the counter data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 18 percent of Cleveland high school students had attempted suicide in the previous 12 months, compared with about 9 percent nationally. Many students in Cleveland face chronic stressors, including neighborhood violence and food insecurity. Researchers have found that young people are more likely to die by suicide in high-poverty communities.Lisa Ellis, a counselor at a high school in Cleveland, developed an eight-week program for first-year students at her school that aims to help reduce the stigma of mental illness, which she where can you buy viagra over the counter sees as a large barrier preventing students of color from getting the help they need.Tips for Parents to Help Their Struggling TeensCard 1 of 6Are you concerned for your teen?.

If you worry that your teen might be experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts, there are a few things you can do to help. Dr. Christine Moutier, the chief medical officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suggests these steps:Look for changes. Notice shifts in sleeping and eating habits in your teen, as well as any issues he or she might be having at school, such as slipping grades.

Watch for angry outbursts, mood swings and a loss of interest in activities they used to love. Stay attuned to their social media posts as well.Keep the lines of communication open. If you notice something unusual, start a conversation. But your child might not want to talk.

In that case, offer him or her help in finding a trusted person to share their struggles with instead.Seek out professional support. A child who expresses suicidal thoughts may benefit from a mental health evaluation and treatment. You can start by speaking with your child’s pediatrician or a mental health professional. In an emergency. If you have immediate concern for your child’s safety, do not leave him or her alone.

Call a suicide prevention lifeline. Lock up any potentially lethal objects. Children who are actively trying to harm themselves should be taken to the closest emergency room.Resources If you’re worried about someone in your life and don’t know how to help, these resources can offer guidance:1. A similar disparity exists among social workers and psychiatrists.“This is a deterrent,” said Dr. Kali D. Cyrus, a psychiatrist at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., and an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University. Talking about your family’s business with a white person — much less an outsider — is often discouraged in the Black community, added Dr.

Cyrus, who is Black. Most mental health care for children takes place in public schools via school psychologists or counselors. This is especially true in low-income districts where other resources are scarce. But these professionals are also in short supply.Even when mental health professionals are available, research has shown that Black adolescents’ depression often goes untreated because of negative perceptions of services and providers or feelings of shame about experiencing depressive symptoms.“Black families don’t typically have literacy in discussing ‘feelings’ with each other,” Dr. Cyrus said in an email.

€œThere is also the strong value of ‘keeping your business out of the street.’”Ever since Kathy Williams’s teenage son Torian Graves took his life in 1996, she has been teaching the people in her hometown, Durham, N.C., about the symptoms she missed and the importance of mental health treatment. But the stigma is still strong, she said. Some parents are afraid of being judged and don’t trust therapists. Sometimes they say.

€œJust pray about it. It will go away.”Yes, she said, prayer is good. But treating mental illness requires more than that. After her son died, she found a poem in his room that he had written as a class assignment. It reads:Part of me is Carolina Blue,Full of Flavor and Excitement,Like a Wild RollercoasterOn the Loose. But, At times,I’m mean, dark, lonely,Black, mad at the world,Like a lost dog in the desert,Yet, they are both true,And they are both me.“Wow, this is the way my child was feeling,” she recalled thinking at the time.“I saw him angry at times and couldn’t figure out why,” she said of her son, who was 15 when he died. €œI believe Torian was depressed and we didn’t know it.”To help remove the stigma associated with therapy, Dr.

Lindsey has developed a pilot program at five New York City public middle and high schools that recruits Black youths who are experiencing symptoms of depression and enrolls them in therapy with a clinician at a school-based mental health clinic. When parents are informed that their children have mental health challenges, they often feel as if they did something wrong, Dr. Lindsey said.“The first thing we tell them is this is not your fault, this is not the result of bad parenting,” he added. As for Joe, who had been struggling with depression in Boston, he did eventually find a therapist with the help of his mother and his primary care doctor, and started therapy at the beginning of 12th grade.“Talking to someone every Wednesday for one hour, it just did something,” he said. €œIt made me feel like a person, like I was wanted.”His father and the rest of his family noticed that he wasn’t as angry anymore.“It’s not that I was crazy,” Joe said. €œI needed someone to understand what I was going through, to give me a way to deal with it.

Now, Joe said, “I love who I am.”If you’re worried about someone in your life and unsure of how to help, use one of these free, 24-7 resources:The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 1-800-273-8255 (TALK)The Crisis Text Line. EDGEWATER, Md.—In buy cheap viagra online a forest dense with maple, beech and poplar trees just a few miles from the Chesapeake Bay, researchers are simulating a flood of the future. Using a web of PVC pipes and rubber hoses, they inundate sections of woodland half the size of a football field to study how the trees might respond to climate change and its effects—namely rising seas and torrential downpours. It’s a local experiment, but the researchers said they hope to build a global model that will help scientists buy cheap viagra online understand what events lead to the earliest stages of tree stress and when forests near coasts start converting to wetlands.

€œPeople are aware that we’re in the midst of great and rapid change. As scientists, we like to understand in advance how that change is going to unfold,” said Patrick Megonigal, associate director of research at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, a key collaborator on the project. The world is bracing for more severe weather as temperatures buy cheap viagra online rise and waters warm.

Hurricane Ida was just a preview of how coasts and the people that live along them will be threatened by the changing climate. At the same time, the wetlands that serve as vital buffers against storm damage are disappearing or being forced to retreat inland—taking over forests, fields and homes. The mid-Atlantic is one illustration of buy cheap viagra online those changes.

The water along the coasts here is rising by about 5 millimeters annually—well above the global average. Part of the problem is that the land is also sinking, mainly due to effects from the end of the last ice age. During that time, glaciers pressed down on one side of the land, raising the end buy cheap viagra online above the Chesapeake Bay.

When they retreated, the land under the glaciers rebounded and the other end started to drop. At the same time, buy cheap viagra online less fresh water is flowing out from rivers to head off the salt water moving upstream. And as the wetlands are subsumed by the salty sea, they have no choice but to retreat upland to take over the forest.

More than 150 square miles of forest in the Chesapeake Bay region have transformed into marshland since the mid-1800s, and the rate of marshland retreat since that time has almost doubled, studies show. Often that conversion leaves behind what are known as ghost forests, the bleached buy cheap viagra online and blackened trunks of trees that salt water has killed. Those changes are visible in the Chesapeake region.

But sea-level rise is a global problem, and it’s also happening in places with much denser populations and few resources or money to keep the sea at bay. Deltaic regions where there is buy cheap viagra online a lot of groundwater withdrawal, such as areas around New Orleans or Manila in the Philippines, are seeing some of the greatest sea-level rise. But the impacts are also being felt in economic engines such as Singapore and New York as well as small island states that stand to lose their entire way of living.

€˜A trade-off people need to think about’ The way coasts change—or are developed—will have important implications for how much damage is done. A study published last month in the journal Natural Hazards Review found that sea-level rise buy cheap viagra online combined with wetland loss could create $2.5 billion–$13 billion in property damage during a strong storm that hits in 2100 or later. The area flooded during such a storm could be up to 2 ½ times larger than without sea-level rise and wetland loss.

Even low-intensity storms are projected to have greater impacts in the future than high-intensity storms today due in large part to the buy cheap viagra online reduction of coastal wetlands, the study concluded. The pace of change is not looking good. A study published in Science in June 2020 found that the threshold at which mangrove forests and similar coastal ecosystems can keep up with rising seas is about 7 mm per year.

Yet that threshold could be eclipsed by the end of this century, according to a recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) buy cheap viagra online. Among its conclusions was that sea levels are rising unavoidably and—under all but the lowest warming scenarios—they’re rising faster than coastal ecosystems can outrun. Many coastal regions are also seeing faster-than-average global sea-level rise, accelerating the risk.

At current rates of rise along the mid-Atlantic, wetlands and other coastal ecosystems can keep pace, said Robert Kopp, director of the Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and buy cheap viagra online an author of the latest IPCC report. €œBut they can only keep up with it if they have the space to do it.” That means they need room to move inland away from the sea. It’s why having forests as a buffer is important.

Locking things in place with hard infrastructure prevents natural ecosystems buy cheap viagra online from adapting, Kopp added. €œThat’s a trade-off people need to think about.” Upland migration Back at the Smithsonian’s Global Change Research Wetland, where the storm surge project is being run, researchers are trying to determine how trees that have not been exposed to salt water respond to ever-higher levels of salinity. They’ll be looking for the threshold beyond buy cheap viagra online which trees quickly decline after being inundated by seawater.

€œWe know that mature trees can tolerate occasional exposure to salt water, particularly if the salt is rinsed out by rain, but we do not know what triggers the trees to decline in terms of the frequency, seasonal timing or severity of storm surge events,” said Megonigal. €œOur study is designed to tease apart the plant, soil and microbial processes and mechanisms by which these changes begin.” The new experiment is called TEMPEST, a fitting moniker for what will effectively gauge future tidal surges. It stems from some of the earliest climate research here on how higher levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide impact plant life buy cheap viagra online.

Set in a wetland dotted by tiny chambers that pump in CO2, the site has helped researchers discover that certain plants respond well to elevated CO2, which they photosynthesize and consume as energy (Greenwire, July 17, 2018). Greenhouse gases also help plants build up soil faster so they can rise above the encroaching sea. When the buy cheap viagra online wetland here got its start around 4,000 years ago, the Chesapeake Bay was about 15 feet lower than today.

But there will come a point where sea-level rise will be too great for this wetland to overcome. To survive, it’s migrating upland. And it’s buy cheap viagra online taking over anything that stands in its way—including those maple, beech and poplar trees.

€œWe know the forests will eventually succumb,” said Megonigal. €œWe don’t know buy cheap viagra online how many storm surges it will take for the trees to suffer.” Flooding the zone To simulate a wetter future marked by more intense rainfall, researchers will flood one forested site with 80,000 gallons of fresh water using an intricate network of tanks and pipes. That’s about 40 times more water than the daily average precipitation during the wettest month of the year today.

Another site they’ll flood with 80,000 gallons of salt water that they’ll draw up from the estuary and pump out through a giant bladder. They’ll flood the sites once, for a 10-hour period, and then watch and measure how the trees respond when buy cheap viagra online their roots are deprived of oxygen. That means testing the rate at which water moves up the trunks and how fast the trees are growing.

They’ll take soil samples to measure moisture and microorganisms and see how much CO2 the soil is emitting. As the water starts to kill the buy cheap viagra online trees, the assumption is that they’ll stop absorbing and processing the CO2 and start to release it, becoming a source of carbon rather than a sink. They’ll be measuring not just for water saturation, but also salt.

And they’ll differentiate between the two stressors to see how they’re harming the trees in different ways. It’s all part buy cheap viagra online of a bigger project working to make observations across the Chesapeake Bay and Lake Erie, led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and funded by the Department of Energy. The idea is to help researchers predict which areas will be at risk from rapid change, said Anya Hopple, a postdoctoral researcher at Pacific Northwest National Lab and the TEMPEST project lead.

They can then use that data to inform protection buy cheap viagra online efforts and policy. They might even see that certain species have the ability to adapt quickly and survive, Hopple said. Getting ahead of it The efforts of the Chesapeake Bay researchers have real-world implications.

In the United States, almost 40 percent of the population lives in buy cheap viagra online coastal counties, according to NOAA. In a low-lying delta like Bangladesh, tidal flooding caused by rising seas has become a main driver of displacement. Knowing what will happen along coasts in the future could help planners and local officials determine how much space to set aside for wetlands to migrate inland, which would mean putting limits on infrastructure development that butts up against the forest.

"The ways we’re using lands and coasts, we’re also encroaching on these areas,” Hopple buy cheap viagra online said. The benefits of saving wetlands are immense. They protect wildlife habitats and coastal infrastructure from storms, remove pollutants from water, and sequester carbon.

More than buy cheap viagra online half the world’s carbon is captured by plants and animals living in or around the world’s coastlines, according to a recent report (Climatewire, July 27). That so-called blue carbon—stored in the soils of coastal habitats—is of interest to countries looking to reduce their emissions by restoring marshes and mangroves. Carbon credits could also potentially be offered as a way to pay for coastal wetland protection.

Megonigal and the researchers at the Smithsonian are working to buy cheap viagra online create coastal report cards that help governments and conservation organizations determine which coastal ecosystems are in need of protection. They’ll do so by drawing on data from the Coastal Carbon Atlas, an interactive map with more than 5,400 carbon profiles. And despite the changes he’s seen to the wetland over the buy cheap viagra online past two decades, Megonigal remains positive.

€œIf you can plan to leave buffers for marshes to move inland and you can plan for an orderly transition of forests to marshes … then there’s a lot of room for optimism,” he said. €œWe just have to focus the conversation not on what might happen, but what is happening and how we get ahead of it.” Reprinted from E&E News with permission from POLITICO, LLC. E&E News provides essential news for energy and environment professionals.Older Israelis who have received a third dose of a erectile dysfunction treatment are much less likely to test positive for erectile dysfunction or to develop severe erectile dysfunction treatment than are those who have had only two jabs, according to a highly anticipated study published on 15 September. The standard regimen for messenger RNA-based erectile dysfunction treatments is two doses, but some governments, including Israel’s, have started administering third ‘booster’ shots. The latest buy cheap viagra online study evaluated 1.1 million Israelis over the age of 60 who had received their first two doses at least five months earlier.

Twelve or more days after receiving a third jab, participants were about 19.5 times less likely to have severe erectile dysfunction treatment than were people in the same age group who had received only two jabs and were studied during a similar time period. €œIt’s a very strong result,” says Susan Ellenberg, a biostatistician at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, who adds that the data might be the most robust she has seen in favour of boosters. But potential biases in the data leave some scientists unconvinced that boosters are necessary for all populations—and the data do not dispel concerns buy cheap viagra online about treatment equity when billions of people are still waiting for their first jab.

Israel, which got an early start on vaccinating its population, began offering third doses of the Pfizer–BioNTech treatment in July, to people aged 60 and over. The latest buy cheap viagra online analysis links the third jab not only with a significant reduction in severe erectile dysfunction treatment, but also with an 11.3-fold reduction in erectile dysfunction s. But Ellie Murray, an epidemiologist at Boston University in Massachusetts, cautions that observational studies such as this analysis can contain biases that are difficult to identify and account for.

For example, people who sign up to get a booster might have a different risk of erectile dysfunction treatment, or behave differently, from people who do not get a third jab. Ellenberg says that the authors try to address some of these buy cheap viagra online potential biases. Even if not all biases have been eliminated, she says, the magnitude of the effect suggests that the booster offers some protection, at least in the short term.

The authors of the study could not be reached before publication. Global ramifications The findings come as a slew of wealthier buy cheap viagra online nations consider offering booster shots. An advisory committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will discuss Pfizer’s application to supply boosters in the United States on 17 September.

One of the authors of the Israeli study is slated to present data to the committee. Murray argues buy cheap viagra online that the potential biases in the data, and insufficient evidence for waning immunity after vaccination, mean that the latest findings don’t indicate a “strong need” for boosters. €œFrom a public-health perspective, it’s way, way more impactful to get more people vaccinated than it is to boost the treatment effectiveness by a few percentage points in those who have already gotten the treatment,” she says.

Murray is not alone in finding the Israeli results insufficient to justify boosters buy cheap viagra online. A review published on 13 September by a team that includes two high-ranking FDA scientists cites a preprint of the study and notes that the short-term protective effect documented in Israel “would not necessarily imply worthwhile long-term benefit”. Dvir Aran, a biomedical data scientist at Technion—Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, says that Israel has deployed boosters to stop transmission in younger people and to prevent severe disease and deaths in older people.

€œIs it buy cheap viagra online the best way?. Whether a two-week lockdown would have given a similar result, I can’t answer that question,” he says. €œBut it’s an interesting approach, trying to stop an outbreak like this with vaccinations.” This article is reproduced with permission and was first published on September 16 2021.Since it was first noticed in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 2014, the spotted lanternfly—a one-inch-long plant hopper that resembles a moth and is native to China—has been wreaking havoc on East Coast lumber, tree fruit and wine industries.

It has spread to at least 26 counties in Pennsylvania, as well as parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, buy cheap viagra online West Virginia and New York State. The invasive, plant-killing insects are known to lay their eggs on almost any surface, including vehicle exteriors. These egg masses “are most concerning because they can go very far by hitchhiking,” says Maureen Tang, a chemical and biological engineer at Drexel University.

Tang is coordinating a project that asks the buy cheap viagra online public to help halt the lanternfly’s spread. Once fully trained, it buy cheap viagra online will let scanning devices detect significant infestations in real time, Kontsos says.

The system will first be put to work in high-risk areas such as rail and shipping yards, where storage containers often sit around for long periods of time and it is difficult and dangerous for a human to check underneath them for egg masses, Tang says. The lanternflies’ favorite tree, Ailanthus altissima—which is native to areas the bugs came from—tends to grow near railroad tracks. Drones already use computer vision to scan for signs of pests buy cheap viagra online by flying over crops and treescapes to check for significant areas of damage.

But Tang says her team’s type of discrete, close-up egg detection system is new. €œWe’ve seen a lot of ingenuity come from spotted lanternfly [research], and this is another great example,” says Heather Leach, who studies these insects at Pennsylvania State University and is not involved in the buy cheap viagra online photography initiative. EDGEWATER, Md.—In a forest dense with maple, beech and poplar trees just a few miles where can you buy viagra over the counter from the Chesapeake Bay, researchers are simulating a flood of the future. Using a web of PVC pipes and rubber hoses, they inundate sections of woodland half the size of a football field to study how the trees might respond to climate change and its effects—namely rising seas and torrential downpours. It’s a local experiment, but the researchers said they hope to build a global model that will help scientists understand what events lead to the earliest stages of tree stress and when forests near where can you buy viagra over the counter coasts start converting to wetlands. €œPeople are aware that we’re in the midst of great and rapid change. As scientists, we like to understand in advance how that change is going to unfold,” said Patrick Megonigal, associate director of research at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, a key collaborator on the project.

The world is bracing for more severe weather as temperatures rise where can you buy viagra over the counter and waters warm. Hurricane Ida was just a preview of how coasts and the people that live along them will be threatened by the changing climate. At the same time, the wetlands that serve as vital buffers against storm damage are disappearing or being forced to retreat inland—taking over forests, fields and homes. The mid-Atlantic is one illustration of those where can you buy viagra over the counter changes. The water along the coasts here is rising by about 5 millimeters annually—well above the global average.

Part of the problem is that the land is also sinking, mainly due to effects from the end of the last ice age. During that time, glaciers pressed down on one side of the land, where can you buy viagra over the counter raising the end above the Chesapeake Bay. When they retreated, the land under the glaciers rebounded and the other end started to drop. At the same time, less fresh water is flowing out from rivers to head where can you buy viagra over the counter off the salt water moving upstream.

Often that conversion leaves behind what are known as ghost forests, the bleached and blackened trunks of trees that salt where can you buy viagra over the counter water has killed. Those changes are visible in the Chesapeake region. But sea-level rise is a global problem, and it’s also happening in places with much denser populations and few resources or money to keep the sea at bay. Deltaic regions where there is a lot of groundwater withdrawal, such as areas where can you buy viagra over the counter around New Orleans or Manila in the Philippines, are seeing some of the greatest sea-level rise.

But the impacts are also being felt in economic engines such as Singapore and New York as well as small island states that stand to lose their entire way of living. €˜A trade-off people need to think about’ The way coasts change—or are developed—will have important implications for how much damage is done. A study published last month in the journal where can you buy viagra over the counter Natural Hazards Review found that sea-level rise combined with wetland loss could create $2.5 billion–$13 billion in property damage during a strong storm that hits in 2100 or later. The area flooded during such a storm could be up to 2 ½ times larger than without sea-level rise and wetland loss. Even low-intensity where can you buy viagra over the counter storms are projected to have greater impacts in the future than high-intensity storms today due in large part to the reduction of coastal wetlands, the study concluded.

The pace of change is not looking good. A study published in Science in June 2020 found that the threshold at which mangrove forests and similar coastal ecosystems can keep up with rising seas is about 7 mm per year. Yet that threshold could be eclipsed by the end of this century, according to a recent report by the Intergovernmental where can you buy viagra over the counter Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Among its conclusions was that sea levels are rising unavoidably and—under all but the lowest warming scenarios—they’re rising faster than coastal ecosystems can outrun. Many coastal regions are also seeing faster-than-average global sea-level rise, accelerating the risk.

At current rates of rise along the mid-Atlantic, wetlands and other coastal ecosystems can keep pace, said Robert Kopp, director of the Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean where can you buy viagra over the counter and Atmospheric Sciences and an author of the latest IPCC report. €œBut they can only keep up with it if they have the space to do it.” That means they need room to move inland away from the sea. It’s why having forests as a buffer is important. Locking things in place with hard infrastructure prevents natural ecosystems where can you buy viagra over the counter from adapting, Kopp added. €œThat’s a trade-off people need to think about.” Upland migration Back at the Smithsonian’s Global Change Research Wetland, where the storm surge project is being run, researchers are trying to determine how trees that have not been exposed to salt water respond to ever-higher levels of salinity.

They’ll be looking for where can you buy viagra over the counter the threshold beyond which trees quickly decline after being inundated by seawater. It stems from some of the earliest climate research here on how higher levels of atmospheric where can you buy viagra over the counter carbon dioxide impact plant life.

When the wetland here got its start around 4,000 years ago, the Chesapeake Bay was about 15 feet lower than today where can you buy viagra over the counter. But there will come a point where sea-level rise will be too great for this wetland to overcome. To survive, it’s migrating upland. And it’s taking over anything that stands where can you buy viagra over the counter in its way—including those maple, beech and poplar trees.

€œWe know the forests will eventually succumb,” said Megonigal. €œWe don’t know how many storm surges it will take for the trees to suffer.” Flooding the zone To simulate a wetter future marked by more intense rainfall, researchers will flood one forested site with 80,000 gallons of where can you buy viagra over the counter fresh water using an intricate network of tanks and pipes. That’s about 40 times more water than the daily average precipitation during the wettest month of the year today. Another site they’ll flood with 80,000 gallons of salt water that they’ll draw up from the estuary and pump out through a giant bladder. They’ll flood the sites once, for a 10-hour period, and then watch and measure how the where can you buy viagra over the counter trees respond when their roots are deprived of oxygen.

That means testing the rate at which water moves up the trunks and how fast the trees are growing. They’ll take soil samples to measure moisture and microorganisms and see how much CO2 the soil is emitting. As the water starts to kill the trees, the assumption is that they’ll stop absorbing and processing the CO2 and start to release it, becoming a source of carbon rather than a sink where can you buy viagra over the counter. They’ll be measuring not just for water saturation, but also salt. And they’ll differentiate between the two stressors to see how they’re harming the trees in different ways.

It’s all part of a bigger project working to make observations across the Chesapeake Bay and where can you buy viagra over the counter Lake Erie, led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and funded by the Department of Energy. The idea is to help researchers predict which areas will be at risk from rapid change, said Anya Hopple, a postdoctoral researcher at Pacific Northwest National Lab and the TEMPEST project lead. They can then use that data to inform protection efforts where can you buy viagra over the counter and policy. They might even see that certain species have the ability to adapt quickly and survive, Hopple said. Getting ahead of it The efforts of the Chesapeake Bay researchers have real-world implications.

In the United States, almost 40 percent of the population lives in where can you buy viagra over the counter coastal counties, according to NOAA. "The ways we’re using lands and coasts, we’re also encroaching on these where can you buy viagra over the counter areas,” Hopple said. The benefits of saving wetlands are immense.

They protect wildlife habitats and coastal infrastructure from storms, remove pollutants from water, and sequester carbon. More than half the world’s carbon is captured by plants and animals living in or around the world’s coastlines, according to a where can you buy viagra over the counter recent report (Climatewire, July 27). That so-called blue carbon—stored in the soils of coastal habitats—is of interest to countries looking to reduce their emissions by restoring marshes and mangroves. Carbon credits could also potentially be offered as a way to pay for coastal wetland protection. Megonigal and the researchers at the Smithsonian are working to create coastal report cards that help where can you buy viagra over the counter governments and conservation organizations determine which coastal ecosystems are in need of protection.

They’ll do so by drawing on data from the Coastal Carbon Atlas, an interactive map with more than 5,400 carbon profiles. And despite the where can you buy viagra over the counter changes he’s seen to the wetland over the past two decades, Megonigal remains positive. The standard regimen for messenger RNA-based erectile dysfunction treatments is two doses, but some governments, including Israel’s, have started administering third ‘booster’ shots. The latest study evaluated 1.1 million Israelis where can you buy viagra over the counter over the age of 60 who had received their first two doses at least five months earlier.

But potential biases in the data leave some scientists unconvinced that boosters are necessary for where can you buy viagra over the counter all populations—and the data do not dispel concerns about treatment equity when billions of people are still waiting for their first jab. Israel, which got an early start on vaccinating its population, began offering third doses of the Pfizer–BioNTech treatment in July, to people aged 60 and over. The latest analysis links the third jab not only with a significant reduction in severe erectile dysfunction treatment, but also with an 11.3-fold reduction where can you buy viagra over the counter in erectile dysfunction s.

Ellenberg says that the authors try to address some of these potential biases where can you buy viagra over the counter. Even if not all biases have been eliminated, she says, the magnitude of the effect suggests that the booster offers some protection, at least in the short term. The authors of the study could not be reached before publication. Global ramifications The findings come as a slew of wealthier nations where can you buy viagra over the counter consider offering booster shots. An advisory committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will discuss Pfizer’s application to supply boosters in the United States on 17 September.

But the accelerating spread of the viagra in rural regions has a Midwestern hospital administrator wondering how they will rise to challenge.

In February, Lexington Regional Health Center in Lexington, Nebraska, braced for an onslaught of erectile dysfunction treatment positive cases. The only hospital for the town of just over 10,000, Lexington Regional watched and waited for cases to come through their doors. Meeting almost daily, the hospital staff prepared for the worst – switching some rooms to isolation units, constantly assessing their supply of personal protective equipment, and adapting to the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention. But cases didn’t start to come until mid-April, when the hospital started to see as many as four erectile dysfunction treatment patients a day. That surge lasted a few weeks as it cycled through a meat packing plant nearby.

Now, the hospital faces a much grimmer outlook, said Lexington Regional administrator Leslie Marsh. Staffing shortages, bed shortages at the state level, and funding issues will make the impact of the erectile dysfunction much worse for rural hospitals, she said. €œThe state is way worse off in terms of staffed-bed capacity, … and that impacts all of us — especially rural,” Marsh said. €œThe state’s ability to care for patients that require hospitalization, intensive care and ventilator care is very concerning and untenable.” Multiple factors are affecting hospital capacity, Marsh said. For example, “critical staffing shortages have compounded the problem and there is no easily identified ‘quick’ fix.” Dawson County, where Lexington Regional is located, has more than doubled the number of deaths due to the erectile dysfunction since spring.

€œTo date, Dawson County has had 17 potential deaths with two ‘questionable,’” Marsh said in an email interview with the Daily Yonder. Questionable cases patients who test positive for erectile dysfunction treatment but are admitted for other issues. The local public health district has had 48 total potential deaths, with eight of those being questionable. “The state is way worse off in terms of staffed-bed capacity, … and that impacts all of us — especially rural,”Lexington Regional Health Center in Lexington, Nebraska, administrator, Leslie Marsh. On Friday, November 6, the county reported 24 new cases.

Other counties near Dawson also reported increased cases – 85 in Buffalo County, 11 in Kearney, 10 in Phelps. But treating them, she said, was exacerbated by national nursing shortages. According to a study cited by the Nursing Times, as many as 36% of the nurses responding to a survey by the Royal College of Nursing were considering quitting. A survey by HolliBlu, an online nurses’ support group, found that 62% of their members were considering quitting. For rural hospitals that have difficulty getting help in the first place, Marsh said, nurse shortages during a viagra are a costly problem.

Marsh said a recent report shows a quarter of nurses nationally have left hospital positions or nursing in general since the viagra’s start. €œThis is important to Nebraska because we are not only experiencing this phenomenon, [but] demand for nurses is way higher than in ‘normal’ times and it is becoming difficult if not impossible to secure nurses from any place and in any way.” Traveling nurses, those nurses that will come into an area temporarily to work, have filled the gap, but those nurses add to costs. Marsh said travelling nurses in Nebraska urban areas can earn up to $150 an hour, which can attract rural nurses who don’t earn that kind of pay. €œRural already operates without much bench depth and is being disproportionately impacted by nurses leaving the profession/hospital role and also leaving rural positions to travel,” Marsh said. Donald Lloyd, president and CEO of St.

Claire Regional Hospital in Morehead, Kentucky, said that his hospital has had to bring in traveling nurses to handle the influx of cases they are seeing as well. €œWe have experienced some staff who has just decided that, you know, life is too short, and this isn’t what I want to do the rest of my life,” he said. €œAnd some, because of the consequences of the erectile dysfunction treatment viagra, they’ve had to leave – they might have small children, and there’s not another person to help with the children, or they’ve had to hang up their nursing shingles to become a home-school teacher right now.” Also, he said, outside nurses were brought it to give existing staff a break. What administrators across the country thought would last a few months has now stretched into eight months, with no end in sight. €œCurrently, we are experiencing our largest volume of erectile dysfunction treatment-positive patients that we have seen since the viagra began,” Lloyd said.

After an initial outbreak in April, the viagra seemed to plateau in June, rise again after July 4, but then level off for a while, Lloyd said. But the eight-county Eastern Kentucky region St. Claire serves has seen cases on the rise again. €œSince October we’ve just seen an increase in not only active cases, but the acuity of those cases,” he said. €œAnd again, those patients that are typically being hospitalized right now are patients with underlying relevant risk factors or a significant chronic health conditions that makes them more vulnerable.” Most patients, he said, are cared for at home.

But of the eight patients in the hospital now, however, four are in intensive care and two are on ventilators. Rural hospitals remain financially vulnerable but things have improved since the early period of the viagra. St. Claire regional furloughed 300 employees earlier this year – most of them in academic or administrative positions – to help the hospital stay afloat. To mitigate the spread of the erectile dysfunction, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear shut down elective procedures at hospitals, eliminating major income streams for hospitals.

On May 25, however, Congress passed the erectile dysfunction Aid, Recovery and Economic Stimulus (CARES) Act, which provided funding to hospitals, and extra funding to rural hospitals. That money is gone now, he said. €œWe’re so grateful for it because it got us through the very, very worst elements of (the erectile dysfunction treatment shutdowns),” he said. €œBut we’ve used the entire allegation for the additional expenses, like bringing in reinforcements, and getting some of the supply-chain issues fixed on a personal protective equipment.” “Since October we’ve just seen an increase in not only active cases, but the acuity of those cases”Donald Lloyd, president and CEO of St. Claire Regional Hospital in Morehead, Kentucky The hospital is still fully funding all of the community testing for the area.

But so far, there’s no word of any relief coming out of Washington, D.C., he said. Instead, the hospital has adjusted operations to meet obligations. For Lexington Regional in Nebraska, the strings attached to the money mean they can’t use it to the way it would be most helpful. €œThe use of provider relief funds, according to the most recent [Health and Human Services] FAQs, are questionable,” Marsh said. €œWe had planned to build an ER that met present day demands, add HVAC systems to OB rooms and to the rest of our smaller erectile dysfunction treatment wing.

We are waiting for final guidance, which is supposed to arrive mid to late-November. Currently, even the most generous reporting guidelines to date require us to report and use funds by June 30. So, capital infrastructure like the desperately needed ER addition will be nearly impossible to realize.” Her fear, she said, is that those funds would be taken back if they’re not used in a very specific way. €œThe current FAQs have us wondering if we will be able to use these funds at all,” she said. €œWhile rural is nimble, adapting and innovating quickly and effectively, (CARES Act funding) is a short-term fix…But it is inefficient and does not allow us to be as functional as we could be if the provider relief funds were able to be fully deployed in a way that allowed us to more effectively meet what is becoming a long-term situation.” Before You Go The Daily Yonder is a nonprofit news platform dedicated to reporting on rural people, places, and issues.

Last week, without any real pomp, I brewed a couple beers for that thing in the desert. Turns out they were my 100th and 101st batches of homebrew. Yay! They’re both finished – or at least they’d better be, since I’m kegging them today. I had to use Wyeast 1056 (courtesy of DBC) for the […]

Obviously I haven’t updated in a long time. For the most part, that’s because my brewing equipment is packed up in expectation of moving somewhere or other. Pretty much all I’m doing these days is running in the mornings and trying to avoid heat in the afternoons.

Anyway, I ran 10 km this morning. Probably […]

It’s only been spring here for about a month, but I’m starting to get back into a groove. I’m sure I’m positively dogging it by most people’s standards, but it’s gratifying to be seeing improvement almost daily.

Brewing test batches isn’t necessarily a whole lot of fun, but it does lend itself to some potentially useful experimentation. Throughout my (home) brewing career, I’ve bounced more or less randomly from one Belgian strain to another, in the process collecting most of the common strains, but without really settling on a “house” yeast. For […]

It is exactly as dangerous as it looks.

Heat sticks are becoming popular among home brewers, and for good reason. Having two heated vessels really streamlines a brew day, and makes double brew days significantly less painful. And the economics of electric heat are compelling (in fact, that’s the way I’ve decided to […]

Just a quick note. While I was doing some calculations for Two Mile, I decided to expand on a year-old post on draft system balancing, primarily just to include the relevant results for longer draft systems. Enjoy.

Or not. It doesn’t really affect me either way.

I haven’t posted in… let’s see… six months. Yikes. Here’s a quartet of beer recipes, though, so that’s basically the same as posting almost once per month.

Well, maybe “hate”‘s a strong word. I’ve just never had a wine that I’d prefer over a good beer. I’ll keep trying though. You know, for science.

What I do hate is the wine industry. Bunch of namby-pamby grape gropers whose bottles collect dust and who spit instead of swallow. Which is why my interest […]
