Way to Go, Steve-o

Why does Apple only stand up and say, “this is what we’re doing, and this is why” every year or two? When they do, it usually makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Thoughts on Flash

Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.

Way to ignore the whole Gizmodo iphone seizure of property thing.

  • Astonishing that Apple didn’t release this earlier. By holding back on their reasoning, they allowed the “walled garden” market narrative to completely take hold among the techno-punditry. In some ways their PR machine is brilliant, and in others extraordinarily obtuse, like the whole lost 4G iPhone debacle. When Jon Stewart refers to your company as “Appholes”, you know you’ve lost the PR battle.

    • I think there’s something to be said for that view, but you could also make the argument that the closed-off cult of personality that surrounds Apple always does them more good than harm. There aren’t really many fresh criticisms of Apple, and addressing the old ones ad nauseam would only keep them in the public eye. Ultimately, Apple is best served by the mystery, and attendant orgy of press coverage, of every product launch, no matter how mundane. Which does just make the iPhone prototype debacle that much worse.

Nice blog too. I’m crazy impressed by your labels.

PS: I LOVED the ironically hypocritical bits about Flash being closed and proprietary
